Introduction

As part of its commitment to improving the health and well-being of vulnerable children and families, the KOKOLANA Foundation, through its Health Committee, conducted a humanitarian outreach to Chegu Community in the Mion District of the Northern Region on 5th July 2026. The purpose of the visit was to provide nutritional and medical support to one of the Foundation’s beneficiaries, Fatima Ibrahim, and to educate her caregivers on appropriate child feeding and hygiene practices.

Background

Fatima Ibrahim was born on 11th January 2025 as the twin sister of a boy. At the age of five months, she refused breast milk and has since been unable to receive adequate nutrition. As a result, she has mainly depended on food prepared for the extended family, which has not provided the level of nutrition required for her age and stage of development.

Approximately two weeks before this outreach, members of the KOKOLANA Foundation visited Fatima at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, where consultations were held with the attending medical team. Following comprehensive clinical assessment and laboratory investigations, the medical team confirmed that there was no underlying medical condition responsible for her poor growth and delayed development. Rather, her condition was attributed to inadequate protein intake and poor nutrition. This nutritional deficiency has significantly affected her growth and developmental milestones, as evidenced by the fact that her twin brother is already walking while Fatima is not yet crawling.

The Outreach

The outreach team consisted of nine (9) members of the Health Committee of the KOKOLANA Foundation, who travelled to Chegu Community to present essential food and medical supplies to support Fatima’s nutritional recovery and overall well-being.

The items donated included:

* Rice
* Beans
* Eggs
* Amani dried fish
* Tom Brown
* Palm oil
* Milk powder
* Abidec Syrup
* Cefuroxime Suspension

The donated items were officially received by both parents of the beneficiary.

Health Education

Following the presentation of the items, the Health Committee conducted a practical educational session with the parents. The session focused on:

* Appropriate preparation of the donated foods to preserve their nutritional value.
* Age-appropriate feeding practices to improve Fatima’s nutritional status.
* Personal hygiene practices.
* Environmental hygiene and sanitation to promote good health and prevent infections.

The interactive session allowed the parents to ask questions and receive practical guidance on caring for their child.

Response from the Family

Fatima’s parents expressed their profound gratitude to the KOKOLANA Foundation for its timely intervention, generosity, and concern for their daughter’s well-being. They appreciated not only the donated items but also the education provided, and pledged to apply the knowledge gained to improve Fatima’s nutrition and care.

Conclusion

The outreach to Chegu Community was successfully conducted and achieved its objectives. The donation of nutritious food items, medical supplies, and health education demonstrates the KOKOLANA Foundation’s unwavering commitment to supporting vulnerable children and promoting healthier communities.

The Foundation remains committed to monitoring Fatima’s progress and providing further support where necessary to improve her health and developmental outcomes.
